Year 6 Transition
We are delighted that you are joining us here at St Edmund’s Catholic School for the next step in your child’s educational journey. Moving from primary school to secondary school is an exciting milestone, and we are committed to making this transition as smooth, supportive and inspiring as possible. At St Edmund’s, new Year 7 students quickly become part of our caring and inclusive community, where they are encouraged to grow in confidence, build new friendships and embrace the opportunities ahead. This section is designed to provide all the information you need to support your child as they begin their journey with us in September.
SECONDARY SCHOOL Transition Advice for Parents
- Practice the Journey: Do a few trial runs of their new school route over the summer. If they will be walking or taking the bus alone, make sure they know how to pay for transit and have emergency numbers saved.
- Master the Timetable: Spend time understanding how to read their new timetable. Help them figure out exactly what books and equipment they need on specific days so they can pack their bag the night before.
- Rehearse the Canteen: Review the school lunch and cashless payment systems with them. It is helpful to practice budgeting and ordering food to minimize lunchtime stress.
- Organise the Basics: Label everything—from their blazer and PE kit to stationery and shoes. Encourage organisation and responsibility for packing their bag at home, so essentials never go missing in the morning rush.
- Prioritise Sleep: Secondary school requires a lot more mental energy. Ease them into a consistent secondary-school bedtime routine a few weeks before term starts.
