Trauma Informed Schools UK

https://www.trauma-informed.uk/

We are proud to announce that following a recent inspection, St Edmund's Catholic School has successfully met the standards for the Trauma Informed Schools Accreditation. The fantastic report describes our school as a community where emotional wellbeing is central to decision-making, staff understand and respond to pupils with empathy and care and a culture of trust, safety and belonging is clearly evident.

The report from the visit highlights that trauma-informed practice is deeply embedded in our culture, with students feeling safe, supported and able to access trusted adults across the school.

We are incredibly proud of our staff, students and wider community who make this possible every day. We are extremely excited and honoured to be working with Trauma Informed Schools UK and look forward to supporting many more pupils in the years to come.

Trauma-Informed School Approach

"At St Edmund’s Catholic School, we believe that every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and supported. We understand that some students may face challenges outside of school that can impact their ability to learn, build relationships, and thrive. That is why we are proud to be developing as a trauma-informed school."

What does this mean?

Being trauma-informed means we:

  • Recognise the impact of trauma on learning, behaviour, and wellbeing
  • Respond with empathy and understanding, not judgement
  • Create safe, predictable environments where all students feel secure
  • Support emotional regulation and resilience through our curriculum and pastoral care
  • Work in partnership with families and external services to provide the best possible support

Why does this matter?

Research shows that trauma can affect brain development, emotional regulation, and behaviour. By adopting trauma-informed practices, we help students feel safe and connected—key ingredients for learning and growth. This approach benefits all students, not just those with known experiences of trauma.

What will you see in our school?

In our trauma-informed school, you will see:

  • Staff trained in trauma awareness and responsive strategies
  • A calm, nurturing environment with clear routines
  • Restorative approaches to behaviour and discipline
  • Opportunities for students to express their voice and build positive relationships
  • Support systems for students who need additional help
